Ok, best beach ever! Past tremendous ruins, a ban on development keeps the surrounding area absolutely undeveloped.

There's a huge crack between two mountains and we hiked a long way in through freezing cold water. Beautiful rock formations carved out of marble and other materials gives Utah a run for its money. Hard to capture the scale here...

Then tea on the river, literally, with the hippies.

Fri, 19 Aug 2011 14:51:48 -0700 Underground city, Derinkuyu http://blog.roymond.com/underground-city-derinkuyu http://blog.roymond.com/underground-city-derinkuyu

It's hard to capture in photos, but these caves are cut out of the rock, underground, and can hold ~20,000 people. They lived here for a couple hundred years, hiding in the barren desert. Well, underneath the barren desert. It's pretty insane, and no one knows how big the city is, but it goes down 120 meters and the tunnels go on and on. Houses, churches, grave sites, wells, wineries, you get the picture. Look up underground cities, Turkey in Wikipedia and don't faint. It's amazing.

They were persecuted and run out of town. They found these amazing stone formations were easily hollowed out, creating rooms, stairs, churches. You know...second home kind of things. Extraordinary structures and some sadly graffitied frescos.

It's hot, it's hip, it's big, it's crowded. All the tour buses park there.

1) a prominent doctor lost his head.
2) Temple of Hadrian
3) Library of Celsus
4) Library facade

The scale of this place is difficult to capture! Also, the scale of the surrounding resort schlock. But nonetheless, an extraordinary site. It took close to 500 years to still not finish it. I've heard of bad contractors, but that's simply ridiculous.

Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:36:47 -0700 Eats on the road http://blog.roymond.com/eats-on-the-road http://blog.roymond.com/eats-on-the-road

The flat bread with spinach and cheese is an Anatolian specialty and a large woman made the bread for us on a domed crepe-maker-like surface over a coal fire. Just amazing!

Then during a day of dusty hiking amongst extraordinary rock carved caves (still editing those photos) we happened across a little oasis under apple trees along a river. One of those unexpected blessings, both culinary and spiritual. And yummy!

And a mom and her son let it shine.
